Retrofit Basement & Extension Kite Area, Cambridge

We were contacted by clients wanting to extend into a cellar that had been converted in the 70s. They wanted to make the basement feel like part of the house, replace failed damp proofing and create extra space for a bathroom, utility room, living room and bedroom.

The project

The specification

We worked with the clients to formalise the many ideas they had for this space which resulted in the following specification:

  • Lowering and levelling of floors to create a 2.35m ceiling height in line with the rest of the house.
  • Excavation of a new area to allow the cellar occupy the building’s entire width.
  • Enlargement of lightwell and fitting of spot/wall lighting to brighten the space.
  • Replacement of failed damp proofing with cavity drain membranes.
  • Full fit out.

The solutions

Our clients wanted to make the place feel like part of the house above so we constructed an identical matching staircase and created the new space with a great bathroom, galley utility room, spacious living room and beautifully-appointed double bedroom.

We arranged and coordinated all necessary services from design to engineering and party wall surveying. We lessened the impact on our clients neighbours, enclosing the site using a professionally-built hoarding with walkway and kept everybody informed of progress. The project was completed in the estimated 16 weeks and to budget.
